The Craft Story
These tagines are handcrafted in La Chamba, Colombia, by artisan Astrid Betancourt Garcia and her family, part of a community of over 1,300 artisans preserving this iconic ceramic tradition. Each piece is wheel-shaped by hand and fired twice using rice husks — a process that creates the distinctive black finish and strengthens the clay.
This technique reflects centuries of Indigenous knowledge and craftsmanship, producing cookware that enhances flavour, retains heat and connects cooking to cultural heritage.
